Granite vs. Quartz Countertops: Which Is Right for You?
The debate of granite versus quartz countertops is one of the most common among homeowners planning a kitchen or bathroom update. Both materials are popular in Chicago homes, and each has its passionate fans. Granite is a natural stone celebrated for its unique beauty, while quartz is an engineered material lauded for its consistency and low maintenance. So which one should you choose for your project?
Let’s compare granite and quartz on key factors to help you decide.
Appearance and Aesthetic Options
• Granite’s Natural Beauty: Granite is 100% natural, cut from quarries around the world. Each slab of granite has unique patterns, colors, and mineral speckles. This means your granite countertop will be one-of-a-kind, with natural charm and variation.
• Quartz’s Consistent Elegance: Quartz countertops are engineered, typically around 90-95% ground natural quartz mixed with resins and pigments. Because it’s man-made, quartz slabs are very consistent in color and pattern. You can get quartz that mimics the look of marble or solid colors with or without particles.
Durability and Hardness
• Scratch & Heat Resistance: Granite is extremely hard and resistant to scratches. You can cut on it, but it’s better to use a cutting board to avoid dulling your knives (and to preserve the sealer). Granite is also highly heat resistant – you can often place a hot pot directly from the stove on granite without damage (though it’s wise to use trivets to be safe). Quartz is also very hard (the quartz mineral is one of the hardest substances). It resists scratches in everyday use as well. However, one caution: quartz is not as heat resistant. .
• Stain Resistance: Here quartz has the edge. Quartz is non-porous, so it’s highly resistant to staining. You won’t need to seal it, and even bold-colored spills usually wipe right off. Granite is porous to some degree (varies by type of granite). Without sealing, granite can absorb oils or colored liquids and possibly stain.
Maintenance and Care
• Granite Maintenance: Requires periodic sealing (typically once a year is recommended, though some modern sealers last longer). Daily cleaning with a mild, granite-friendly cleaner or just soap and water works well. Avoid harsh chemicals that can degrade the sealant.
• Quartz Maintenance: Essentially maintenance-free in terms of sealing – it never needs sealing. Just wipe with mild soap and water or a regular countertop cleaner. Because it’s non-porous, there’s no worry about bacteria or mold in tiny crevices either.
Environmental Factors
• Natural vs. Man-made: Granite is a natural stone, which has an appeal for those wanting something straight from nature. However, it needs to be quarried (mined) and shipped, often from overseas, which has environmental impacts. Quartz is man-made, but uses natural quartz aggregates that are often industrial by-products and might be fabricated closer to home depending on the brand.
• Indoor Air and Health: Both granite and quartz are generally safe for indoor air quality. Granite is natural and inert, though there have been discussions about radon emissions – studies indicate granite countertops do not pose any significant radon risk in homes.
Style Trends and Resale
Currently, quartz has been extremely popular in new kitchen designs, often favored for its bright, marble-look designs and ease of care. In fact, industry trends in recent years show many designers lean towards quartz, predicting its popularity will continue to rise.
A home with either will typically have an edge over a home with laminate or tile countertops. Some buyers might have a personal preference, but it’s unlikely that having one over the other would hurt a sale in the Chicago market. If anything, offering granite or quartz just shows the kitchen has been updated with quality materials.
So, Which Should You Choose?
It ultimately comes down to your priorities:
• If you value natural uniqueness, heat resistance, and the idea of real stone – and you don’t mind a little upkeep – granite is a fantastic choice. You’ll enjoy the varied patterns and the story of a natural slab in your home.
• If you prefer zero maintenance, uniform look, and a broader color selection (especially if you want pure whites or bold patterns) – and you’re careful about not placing hot pans down – quartz will likely make you very happy.
• If you are torn, consider where the countertop is going. For an actively used kitchen, maybe you lean quartz for ease. For a smaller area like a bar top or an accent island where you want drama, maybe a unique granite.
See for yourself
Many homeowners in Chicago even mix materials – perhaps granite on the perimeter counters and a quartz or wood on the island, or vice versa, to get the best of both worlds visually.
